  TRAVEL BASEBALL

Travel Baseball is a great opportunity for more competitive baseball and a chance to represent our Ridgewood community. It requires a significant commitment on both the player and his/her family.  Players are expected to be at all games and practices during the season.  For kids playing multiple sports during the season, we expect baseball to take priority.  We ask that you consider your ability to make this commitment before trying out.

Travel Tryouts:    (Please read carefully before participating in tryouts.)

Travel Baseball consists of very competitive teams and unfortunately, not all promising young players who try out can be asked to play on a team. As such, at these tender ages, the kids will be subject to possibly being "cut" and to be disappointed. Please understand that if you do not want to subject your child to this possible disappointment, please do not appear for the tryouts. For most, there is always next year, when the kids are a bit older and when you feel they are better able to handle the situation. Of course, those who do not play travel baseball  are strongly urged and encouraged to continue to play recreational baseball with their friends and consider trying out again next year. Also, travel baseball is a serious commitment in terms of time spent for practices and games from early April through the end of July. If you anticipate potential conflicts or missed games due to camps, trips, club teams, and/or other sports please consider there are many children who love and would be 100% committed to baseball. Because the interest in travel baseball is so strong, we urge you to consider your child’s ability to commit before participating in the tryouts and to discuss any such conflicts with the coaches ASAP.

The coaches take the tryout process very seriously and try to make it as fair as possible. As such, we understand conflicts arise but we ask that you make every effort to be at all tryouts. The more we see the fairer the process.

While we are volunteers and not professional coaches, we will do everything we can to give every child an opportunity to display their skills. Travel is not REC and not everyone will be chosen for a team. In fact, based on the number of registrations, over half the group will not make it. This statement is not meant to deter anyone's interest, it is merely meant to give parents an opportunity to manage their child's expectations. We all agree that this is the hardest part of the job and we get no enjoyment out of telling children they cannot play. What we do strive for is an even playing field for all candidates. We recognize these are young kids who develop differently and will give them every shot. Unfortunately, we will be making some tough decisions and, most likely, we will make some mistakes. With limited tryout sessions, especially those held indoors, we will not always be able to select all those potentially worthy players and we will likely miss that "diamond in the rough". Please understand and manage your and your child's expectations accordingly.

For the 9s -14s, there will be practices and games in the Spring, usually on Sundays throughout April and May ( so as not to conflict with games in the Recreational league).  The summer games are played from early June thru July 25 or so. We also intend to play in a Memorial Weekend tournament and league playoffs at the end of the summer season (should end by July 30). Players who make the teams are expected to be committed and available to play on Memorial Day Weekend and throughout the playoffs in July.

The teams will generally practice 1 to 2 days per week in the spring. There are approximately 8 games in the spring and 12 scheduled games in the summer, not counting tournaments and playoffs. The summer season begins in early June and runs through mid-July. We generally play two weeknight games and one on Saturday with limited practices given the concentration of the season.

As of 2006 Cut-off Age Change

Important Message from the commissioner:

Dear Parents of Travel Baseball Candidates:

As in recent years, virtually all amateur Baseball ("BB") organizations have accepted a recommendation from USA Baseball (which represents amateur BB in the U.S. as a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee and the International BB Association Federation) to change the age determination date from July 31 to April 30 for 2006 and beyond. For a complete explanation and frequently asked questions of this issue, we refer you to www.littleleague.org/media/age_change_Oct05.asp . There are also age charts at the website to assist in determining your child's age.

For the new 8 yr olds, we continue to use April 30 as the bright-line determination date. As such, if your child is 8 yrs old on 4/30 he/she may try-out. If he/she is 7 on that date, they will have to wait until next year. (e.g. Those who turn 8 yrs old on May 1 or thereafter will have to wait to try-out in the following year.) The April 30th date applies to the all age cutoffs.

Please understand that the RBSA did not create this rule change and  the new cut-off date will cause some administrative headaches for the  Board, the coaches as well as the players and families. Please be patient and it will work out. Remember that playing on a travel BB team is meant to be very competitive BB, especially as the kids get older. It requires a very significant commitment of time and energy on the part of the players, coaches and their families. While this is not meant to deter kids from trying out, if they are better suited for only Rec play, please be objective and enjoy the LL baseball competition within our village rec program

Sincerely,
Jim Albano , President & Tom Moore, Travel BB Commissioner
